Ford 8.8 ID question

Ok, Im GM and Chrysler trained, how do you tell what gears are in an Exploder 8.8 rear end?
Without pulling the cover?

I visited the local Pick and Pull Sunday and there were 2 Exploders there, Door tag showed code 45 for the rear end. Diff tags were there, but a mystery.

I shoulda taken a pic of them, but I didnt....

I believe code 45 is an open diff 3.55 gear set. Hope that helps

Yes, it means I did good by NOT buying one of them...

Which is the code for 4:10 with a locker (or whatever morphadite ford decided was the locker of choice back then).

Screwed up thing is, i am looking around the internet, some places say 45 is the 4:10, some say 3:55.

I think ford varied the code between models..ranger, explorer, f-150 etc...pretty sure i remember 45 on an explorer being 3.55. What are your plans for the 88?

Going to end up in my '90 YJ 2.5L AX5, it will go in with Waggy springs, and a SSYE from JB conversions.

The axle is my first step, after I get it and get it set up, I get the springs, then SSYE, then bolt it all up and order a driveshaft.

Then comes the 4.3 or 5.7L NV3550 (or 700R4) swap....
