Ford 8.8 or Dana 44??

Hey all,

Thanx for the help on deciding to go (SOA) i ordered the parts and they will b here in a couple of days!!! now i have another Question.

I have the option of purchasing a dana 44 with Disc brakes for 500$. tis is an open axle w/4.10 gears or..... a ford 8.8 with Disc Brakes for 350$ same specs i think..

Now heres my question? What do i get? the 8.8 is cheaper but is it compatible with my dana 30? how much would it cost to swap them out ? And i eventually want to run 4.56 on 35x12.50r15 with selectable OX LOCKERS?

ANY SUGGESTIONS????

I did this swap like 3 months ago, the 8.8 is narrower then the stock Dana 35, its like 3/4" smaller on each side, so not by a lot.
As far as compatibility, you just have to find one that has the same ratio, I put one that had the 4.10 and a LSD.
To install I ordered a kit from ballistic fabrication, I think it was like $120, then figure labor if your not doing your self, but it was not that hard. If the 8.8 does not have the right gears then I would consider the Dana 44, to re-gear labor $250 to $500 plus cost of gears $200, but if the 8.8 matches then I would go with that.

The 8.8 is cheaper and stronger than the Dana 44. It will work just fine with your Dana 30 so long as you get one with matching gears or change the gears in one to match your Dana 30.

"And i eventually want to run 4.56 on 35x12.50r15 with selectable OX LOCKERS?"

It will do that just fine.

Rear disc makes me suspect it's out of a GC which if it is I'd avoid it. It will most likely have an aluminum pumpkin which you do not want.

If it's out of a TJ (what years did they include rear disc on the TJ?) then you should be ok.

The D30 will handle 35s just fine.

I did the 8.8 swap a few months ago. I had a bent axle shaft, decided I wanted to upgrade. I got the Sport explorer 8.8 with tow, for the 4.10 and the LSD, also for the disk breaks for cheap. I found a kit that has everything and more to do the swap, all I needed was the axle and this kit and brake parts. I found it at a site called Know Where To Jeep, part number KW2J-YJ8.8 Includes:
*Solid Axle Ford 8.8 Diff Cover
*Currie Disc Brake Hose Kit
*Dana Spicer Driveshaft Flange Adapter (Fits 1310 u-joint)
*Four 12mm x 1.75 thread 12-point driveshaft flange bolts
*3/8" thick A50 Steel U-bolt Plates With 3 Pin Mounting Options or U-bolt Flip Kit
*Four 10" x 5/8" x 3-1/4" U-bolts with 1/4" Laser Cut Washers and Nuts
*1/4" Thick Steel Shock Brackets or Extended Shock Mounts
*1/4" Thick Steel Leaf Spring Perches or Cast Perches

This made the install very easy. I tried to price out and buy locally but it was more expensive so I went with the kit. Never been happier

Thanks for posting the links. They have changed things since I bought it. There was one kit for the yj and I didn't have the option to remove parts, I did have to call and ask for the u bolt flip kit. Either way, Eric that works there (answers the emails and calls) is an awesome help. I called him quite a bit on my swap and with the questions I had with parts for my d30. Great customer service when you call or email. I always check there first for parts, always beats my local parts prices.
