frame rot question

Hi all,

As I was dealing with a tailpipe issue, I noticed I have some frame rot on the back right of the frame, at the rear shackle. It looks like:

I took a hammer to it and there is some more rot up from the hole, and a little behind. There doesn't seem to be any major problems on top of the frame, just the bottom (a little on the side).

As someone who is just learning about tinkering with vehicles, what do I do? I have done some research about doner frames, but this is above my finances and I have no welding knowledge/equipment. I have read about some solutions that seems to put more metal around the problem area - but how will this work if the issues is right where the shackle connects to the frame?

I am hoping this is less of a problem because it is on the bottom compared to the top? This problem is not on the other rear side of the frame, just the right rear section.

This Jeep is an April to October driver only, and I would be surprised if it did more than 1000-2000 miles a season (from now on - I just bought it this spring) I don't go crazy off roading, maybe some class 4 roads once in a while...I really just wanted summer jeep to take the dogs to the river and bum around town when its nice. Lots of dirt roads.

I am looking for suggestions, hopefully not super duper expensive, and hopefully not "scrap the jeep". Anybody had a similar experience?

Thanks,

I just had to deal with the same exact rot you have except on both sides... I ended up welding in plates from the rear bumper lower bolt hole and ran the strip of flat stock about a foot up towards the front of the jeep.. Welded the entire length down both sides and then plated both sides of the frame and tied the into the same bolts that hold the bumper on...All in all i would suggest dropping the rear bumper and fuel tank so you can really lay a good solid weld on the flat stock you'll be adding........ The down side is, eventually it will come back as it rots from the inside out...

thanks for the reply,

would I be better off just cutting out the problem area with something like this:

Either way, does it look safe enough to drive on for the duration?

thanks

I found them here:

Auto Rust Technicians

For 125 it doesn't seem to bad, so long as you can get it done.

that pic I posted of the replacement frame insert, it looks like it is three sided...shouldn't it be 4 sided to match up with the original frame?

depends on what u need, most of the time the frame only rots on the bottom and side. u seen how bad mine was but the tops were mint. but with how bad urs are not u could probably just patch them with a little wielding work and they would be fine for what u use it for
