Thumbs down Fried Distributor Cap

So today I was cleaning up my YJ and checking fluid levels since I hadn't in a few months and something caught my eye under the hood. The center of my distributor cap had a radial hole around the spark plug, when I touched it the whole center plug/cap nipple came off.

I just got this YJ back in March '12 and did a tune up replacing the cap, rotor, and plugs. Anyhow I ran out and got a new coil and cap. Upon taking the cap off I found the tip of the coil was snapped off and a half dozen fried stink bugs in there.

Is it possible that the little bastards got in there and short circuited the cap? I was wondering why for the past month or so it felt like my 2.5L had less balls than earlier this year. I was having really poor throttle response and instead of getting 17-18mpg I was getting 14mpg, but I thought it was due to letting it warm up in the colder weather. After replacing the coil and cap she's running strong again.

Notice how a broken piece of coil is on the left of the stink bug pile.

Fried coil & cap.

Yeah if I didn't see it for myself, or have pics I wouldn't believe it either. Pics or it didn't happen haha.

Forgot to mention the engine still wreaks of them too. We had a bad infestation at our house/cars this past Oct. before the cold weather hit. For about 2-3 weeks there were thousands of them all over the house as well as hundreds if not thousands in my Jeep since it acted as a micro environment/greenhouse.

I'll second that 'Wow'. I'v never seen anything like that. Where could they have gotten in from? is there any hole or passage they could of found thinking to hibernate or hide in? That almost looks like sabotage....... My Daughters room had Lady Bugs swarm occasionally...... actually squeeze through any of the tiniest of cracks...

Begs to the larger question of where the heck else have they decided to hide?

I think they squeezed in through the crack. You'd be surprised how small of a gap they can slip through. I had to duct tape up some windows and unused doors as well as weatherstrip door frames in my house because they would come through the tiniest crack. Also today I opened my glove box up and there were about 2 dozen in there and another half dozen under the passenger mud mat. I knocked them all out through the passenger drain hole and my chickens nommed them all down.

If you read some of my other posts regarding stink bugs they were b/e the floorboard and carpet piled in hundreds, in the roll bar covers, trasharoo, molle pouches, glove box, door panels, vents, speakers, seat upholstery, everywhere! I wonder how many are b/e my dash and firewall...
