Front Axle Question

Ok ill try and make this as simple as i can. I believe my vacuum motor has gone out on my front axle, it does not engage and obviously wont give me 4wd. I know about posi-lok but dont have the cash to spare right now.

so my question is, Can i engage the axle and leave it without harming it and if i do that will i constantly be in 4wd or only when i shift to 4wd?

Thanks y'all!
Go Dawgs!

You can use washers to space the collar over and have the two sections joined inside the axle tube all the time without any issues. You can also swap in a shaft from a TJ Or late model xj along with a seal inside the diff and be done with the disco as well.

Just make sure you front driveshaft is in good shape. Mine had a loose slip joint and it vibrated like crazy.

I don't want to hijack this thread, but, why did jeep even have the vacuum lock at all if it doesn't hurt it to stay locked up all the time?
Are there any advantages/ disadvantages?

You can just flip the fork on the shaft takes about 10 minutes.
have you checked to see if it is just a bad vacuum hose. That is usualy the problem

A broken vacuum line was the problem on my '90 YJ.
