How much a PITA will they be to do. Needs to get done before I even put in 4wd again. Any suggestions on process for this. Or perhaps right way to do it before I get into it. not to worried but helps to have all I can before I do it.

Assuming this is what you are talking about when you say "front axle"... Great write up here and a VERY useful site.

I just changed mine last week, the axles come out easy, the joints don't!I tried it at home with a socket and big hammer, not good.I literally beat the cross through the cap trying to reinstall.Took them back out, another set of new joints, had them pressed this time. All good now

i recomend investing in a good vice or some good large clamps, i just did my rear u-joints on my 93 yj and it wasn't that bad....might replace the front ones soon just for peace of mind, trucks been sitting for 4 years before i bought it a month ago....needed the rear pinion seal replaced

I just did my front ujoints and balljoints this past weekend too.... I ended up cutting the centers out and used the AZ loaner ball joint press to push out the caps 1 at a time. After cleaning the yokes up, the new ones went in less than 10 mins using the press.... All in all its only a half hour or so job.

You need to pull the wheel, then remove the 36mm spindle nut, brakes, and wheel hub, then the axle will slide out when you remove the hub.

Just replaced my wheel joints. Hubs were rust welded on. Pb blaster, 5 ton puller, and a hammer got them off. The socket extenstion trick didn't work for me. But you have to use a 12pt 13mm socket. Which I also destroyed in the process. Thank god it was Craftsman!! Good luck.
