Front spool?

My 1990 YJ has a D30 and no lock outs at the wheels so can I weld the little gears or put in a spool? It has the disconnect on the right axle tube so that will on lock the front end when I'm on the road I think?

Is the rear already spooled or locked?

A spool in the back mildly sucks, a spool in the front would be horrific.

A spool in the front would be bad even with the axle disconnect on the right axle tube? Wouldn't that unlock it when its out of 4X4? Why is it bad to have a spool in the back?

you would get clunking, attempts to jump and more stress on your rear axle if daily driving with a spool. These problems arise when you attempt to turn a corner and both wheels are traveling at the same speed instead of the outer one turning faster than the inside one. I am no expert but i'm pretty sure that a d35 wouldnot last long with a spool esp. if you are going with anything above 31's.And no if the front is spooled its gonna ALWAYS be locked, even when 4wheel isn't engaged. the front axles always spin on vehicles with vacuum actuated hubs(which your jeep has) and that is why many people go to manual hub lockouts when they want to decrease driveline drag to increase gas mileage.

My rear is locked, I drive it on the street with 33s, Its fine if you like chirpin everywhere you go, and you can cut doughnuts all day long when it wet outside, If you locked the front it would be ok for off road , you would just push the front end more cause its not gona turn as easily. The front axel lock up would make it work on pavement but if you ever left it locked and pulled on to pavement you will break something, prob in the tcase.

welding the front gears not a good idea, you can disconect the axle and run 3x4 intresting

i'm spooled in the front. if you get a posi-lock or similiar manual CAD engagement cable, its manageable. when its engaged, you're going straight, regardless of wheel direction. if you use 4x4 on the road (snow/ice) i would probably not do it. when in 4wd/CAD unlockled it tends to pull to the right pretty good.

a locker will unlock when they're not under power. a spool locks both wheels together regardless.

if you install lockouts you can spool the front, but there'll be lots of getting in and out to lock/unlock when you're wheeling.

that looks like a lunchbox locker to me. it locks when you give it the throttle, but (should) unlock when you're off the gas.
