Front wheel bearings

Decided to rotate my tires one last time this morning in an attempt to squeeze two more weeks out of them. They're pretty well worn out, but I have a brand new set of 35's in the garage awaiting the lift. I realized the wheel bearings in the front, left corner were shot so I go to the parts house to get what I expect to be two sets of bearings w/races and a seal. They hand me a complete hub assembly with the bearings already installed! What the heck? That's awesome! No cleaning and packing or driving out old races and seals... Little more expensive than a bearing change on say a Ford truck, but definitely easier and faster. Just another reason to love my Jeep!

The hardest part of the job was figuring out that the axle shaft nut required a 36 mm socket! That in itself cost me two trips back to the parts house! Ha-Ha...

Do you have any pic's of the repairs. I think I have to do my fron bearings as well. I was messing around with my tires the other day and the front ones seem to woble a little when you grab ahold of the sides and give them a shake

when i did mine some1 told me that if you pull the axle shafts out some you need to go on and replace the inner oil seals. this causes a lot more work. so i'd try my hardest to make sure the shafts dont pull out when you do it. or maybe some1 will chime in and say that they dont need to be replaces unless they're leakin. regardless of if the shafts come out. but the bearings are pretty simple

Sorry, no pics. I never heard that if you pulled out the axle shaft, you had to replace the seal. I hope that's not true, because I pulled mine out to inspect the condition of it. I guess I'll find out. I remember doing the same thing when I replaced the hubs and spindles on my 86 F-150, (Dana44 if I remember correctly), and never had a problem there.

where did you get your hub assy? And how much was it.
i was checking the allignment on mine last week and the drivers side is doing exactally what you described.

Advance Auto (discount auto parts)...the Timken assembly was $145.00 and the other, (don't remember brand name), was $118.00.

What do you want/need pics of? I took a few when I changed the right front on my 88. I will find 'em and put them online later.

PM me if you want specific pics.

FYI:
The bolts holding the hub assm on were 12-point 13mm, the axle nut is 36mm. Do a search and you will find a neat way to use the steering as a press and skip a puller or beating on the old one to get it out...

I just completed the bearing/hub assembly changeout this weekend. I went with new rotors and brake pads as well. The old equipment was a rusty mess just waiting to fail.
I did remove the axle shafts for inspection and reinstalled them with no problems. They slid back into the diff like budda. No apparent fluid leaks detected so far....
The first side took about 4 hrs. what with fighting the rusted bolts and cleaning the steering knuckle and yoke assembly. The second side only took about 2hrs. start to finish as I had the lay of the land by then.
The hardest part was pulling the bearing assembly off the steering knuckle (No place to mount the puller arms). Serious doses of PB blaster and tapping with a BFH finally did the trick ( I had brake dust shields in the way to make it more interesting).
I read everything I could find about the job, got the parts and tools together and was ready to start using the Haynes when lo and behold the Factory Service Manual arrived FedEX. (Step by step and all that.)
The link in the above post is an excellent guide but I didn't see it til this morning.
Anyway, bad job done well as they say....difficulty level 4 out of 10 IMHO.

As previosull said this job is not that hard, it's just a matter of having the tools, some rust breaker and a little brut strenght at times I started oout using that link that is listed above and it came in quite handy with the bolt and socket sizes. When it came time to take that axle nut of, that was a bear. I had to use a breaker bar plus about a three foot long pipe to get that bad boy off; it wasn't easy. The hub assmebly required me to use a three arm pully to pry it off. When the axle came out, it had mud and much on it so I know my front diff. is shot. I did the left side this weekend and am going to try and do the right side this coming weekend, now that I have the tools and the know how it shouldn't be that difficult.

Hub assembly replacement is a pretty straight forward project but the FSM alerts you to any potential problems along the way. Also gives torque specs for hub bolts, calipers etc. and what to look for when inspecting the axles, yokes, seals, brake lines and vacuum disconncet system ( if you have one).
Awesome reference book. I'm studying the MPI system now. Good to know what's going on with that whole setup.......Slowly moving out from under the shade tree.
