fuel or electrical problem??

My 1995 YJ has this problem: (2.4L....fuel inj....manual trans)
When I first got the jeep, it would run great until I had run a tank of gas about 100 miles, then would start spitting and sputtering like it was running out of gas. I thought my filter was stopping up, but when I filled the tank it would run great again. This has continued to occur for the six months I've owned the jeep and I've done nothing about it but add gas. It occurred last night with only 73 miles on the clock and the jeep died. It was acting like it was flooded and would occasionally backfire very loudly. I finally got it cranked but could not touch the gas pedal without killing the jeep. I limped into a station and topped off the tank (about 8.5 gallons). I got it started after about 15 minutes of turning it over and backfiring. It spit and sputtered and would not move without dying. After idling about 5 minutes it smoothed out and drove home nicely. Before I remove the tank I'd like to get some ideas whether any of you have had a similar problem, or whether you think this is likely trash or water in the fuel, or an intermittent electrical problem. It seems like fuel to me, but I have no experience with fuel injected vehicles, or that much with electronic ignitions. All help will be greatly appreciated.

Update

.......I added "Heet" and Lucas fuel treatment to the gas. It cranked and ran well the next day (only went a couple of miles). The third day the jeep would not crank (again with the turning over fast and loud backfiring. I guess it's not the gas. The check engine light has not come on. I have ordered a diagnostic tester, but don't know how much it will help since the check engine light is not shining. There is fuel pressure at the shrader valve on the fuel injection rail. (That's about all I know about fuel injection). That would lead me to believe that the fuel pump is working to some extent. Has anyone else had this problem? Maybe computer telling the coil to fire at the wrong time?? Would this problem give a problem code?? Please help... I'm stumped until the tester comes in.

Thanks

Sounds like an ignition problem. From others posting similar problems in here, I'd say it's likely the ECM.

Have found several great threads about this problem while exploring the forum. I guess I didn't know what to search for before.... just had to keep looking.
Thanks

Best of luck, and let us know how it gets resolved.

Well, the solution to the problem was simple. I decided to remove the gas tank and look for internal trash or the like. The tank was empty, even though the fuel gauge showed 3/4 of a tank. I filled the tank and it held around 15 gallons. There is a problem with the gauge or the sending unit. I'll just keep track of gas with the trip odometer. Makes you feel really dumb.

Not dumb, just overly trusting.
