My 1995 YJ has this problem: (2.4L....fuel inj....manual trans)
When I first got the jeep, it would run great until I had run a tank of gas about 100 miles, then would start spitting and sputtering like it was running out of gas. I thought my filter was stopping up, but when I filled the tank it would run great again. This has continued to occur for the six months I've owned the jeep and I've done nothing about it but add gas. It occurred last night with only 73 miles on the clock and the jeep died. It was acting like it was flooded and would occasionally backfire very loudly. I finally got it cranked but could not touch the gas pedal without killing the jeep. I limped into a station and topped off the tank (about 8.5 gallons). I got it started after about 15 minutes of turning it over and backfiring. It spit and sputtered and would not move without dying. After idling about 5 minutes it smoothed out and drove home nicely. Before I remove the tank I'd like to get some ideas whether any of you have had a similar problem, or whether you think this is likely trash or water in the fuel, or an intermittent electrical problem. It seems like fuel to me, but I have no experience with fuel injected vehicles, or that much with electronic ignitions. All help will be greatly appreciated.
