Fuel Pump 69302 bottoms out in 20 gallon tank, can plastic end be removed?

I got a fuel pump from Napa N69302 (69302) and the white plastic end that holds the new style strainer bottoms out in the fuel take so I can't screw the unit down. Can the white plastic end be removed and the factory style strainer be used?

I just wonder if the rubber that holds the factory style strainer on will fit on this new pump, it looks like it probably will

I had that problem. It's that the fuel tank tends to get push up on the bottom over time and when you open it up to change the pump nothing is there to stop it from denting in. I put a piece of wood in it with some weight on top for a while to "stretch" out again and then quickly put the sending unit back it and screwed in a couple of bolts so it would stay and then starting putting the other screws in. It took a bit of force on the first few but then it lined up fine.

that sounds like a logical reason for the problem..I don't know that I would like the thought of the tank putting pressure on the pump like that..might not be a problem but it would worry me

I think it's about 3/8" too high, I'm going to take the pump back to Napa now and see what they say.

if the problem is the tank which sure makes sense then you might encounter the same problem with any pump..compare it to the old one and see if they are the same length
