fuel pump (almost) busted?

my pride and joy is still giving me headachs
my last post i stated that my gasket was leaking: fixed it (i acutually replaced all my gaskets and vacuum lines and sensors) so (think) that is done. but the problem persists. after i start the vehicle i have to keep the revs up or it will stall, doing so and keeping the accelarator steady the engine surges 3 to 5 times then runs better for 20 to 30 seconds than the same routine. it does this about 4 to 5 times, then its gone for as long as the engine is running. if i shut her down and start her up 1 to ... minutes later same s*ht.
it's not an o2 problem nor a vacuum one. that leaves fuel or spark. all spark components : new.
during idle i can clearly hear a "whistling" "bee- like" noise ecoming from the gastank in my humble opinion: the fuel pump. is this normal? also when i turn the engine off i can hear a fluid run back to ...? idle is rough as well (i know for a fact that my MAT sensor is dead as well so that is part of the problem to?

1: are you suppose to hear your fuel pump out loud?
2:the running fluid in the engine compartment could that be fuel?
3: how much does the MAT sensor affect al the previous issues?
4: my filler cap rubbers all also rotten clear thru. will anew one help a lot?

i own a haynes manual but can't really find the awnsers.

this all concerns a 2.5 tbi 1990 yj.

cheers, in advance

if you can hear the pump over the running engine, it is on the way out and would cause the surging issue

the fluid you hear is probably oil draining back into the pan

when you first turn the key to run, not start, you should hear a light hum from it for a few seconds

after that, the engine noise usually hides it

I doubt it would throw a code on a 90

Roger for hum before starting! Could it be filth in the tank or pump? I.m having the ecu read today. Intent to clean /inspect the tank and fuel pump and lines this weekend. Any tips (except not to decimate the neighbourhood ;-) ) and uhm do you know wich fuel pump/ the amount of pressure jeepie needs?
Thnx a bunch

Have you checked the fuel pressure?

As far as the fuel system goes there are several things that can effect it. Vacuum lines (which you replaced). The Fuel pressure regulator, fuel pump, and Gas Cap (Bad gas cap wont let pressure hold in the tank)

The surging could be cuased by even more things, however you stated all sensors have been replaced.

I would confirm you have the correct fuel pressure.
Clean your throttle body out.
Run a can of Seafoam through your fuel system.

Cheers for the response.
No on the pressure. I dont have the kit to do it. Wednesday i go to the shop at the base they do. Will check the vacuum there to since it appears i forgot some :'( . About the sensors: asked the guy i bought it from if he really did change all. Could not convince me so... Square one. Waiting for MAT sensor. Then diagnose the hell out of it , literaly. Will Do the pressure checks asap.(compression, fuel and vacuum). Srry for the sidetrack. :-\
Will let y'all no how it turns out.
