Fuel pump question

I installed a new Airtex mechanical fuel pump today because I had the faint smell of gas in the oil. Everything went smooth but when I looked over the instructions it states that the lever must be on the cam correctly. I had already installed the pump and the vehicle starts and runs. How can you tell if it's installed wrong? Will the jeep still start and run if it's in the incorrect position on the cam or should I take the pump back off and do over. I would hate to ruin a cam if it's incorrect.
