fuel pump relay?

Last year after I cut my jeep off I attempted to restart it to move it a foot or so forward and it wouldnt start. I primed the throttle body and it started right up and then died. I put a new fuel pump relay in it and have been driving it for about a year. Yesterday it done the same thing. Knowing that it could be the relay I swapped them around and viola. It started right up, so I went and bought a new one. Died on me today on the road and wouldnt start so I swapped them again and it started right up and got me home. What is causing it to go out? Is the fuel pump about to kick the bucket or maybe a short.

Take a look at the relays you are removing. Do they have blue looking prongs? Often is the case that they fail due to over heating. If so ....the pump could be failing and pulling too many amps. You can also pop the tops off the relay and examine the contacts and the spring arm. IF that is all blue...you have an issue with current draw.

Thanks, Will cheak that. Im an electritian so that makes perfect sence to me. It was warm when I pulled it out. I have seen that happen with a.c. motors and overloads. The motor starts going bad and it starts to pull more amps than the overload is set to or designed to carry. Thing is, latter after I changed the relay and it started I changed them back and the old one would start it. WHAT THE FLIP? This is why I am an electritian, and not a mechanic!

When you turn the key on, do you here the fuel pump running? when it get to pressure, is it shutting off? Is the pump running continually?

That said I would be inclined to examine the buss that the relay plugs into. It almost suggests that the wiggling needed to remove the relay is creating a connection that fails in use. Like a cold solder joint would do. If the relay is having issues seeking ground it would make it heat up...
