Fuel Tank Question

89 Wrangler 4.2, 5 speed, built in Canada. Previous owner said that he ordered it with an "over size" fuel tank and "highway axle". It's steel and seems to hold 20 - 21 gallons. Is this unusual for this year. Everyone I talk to with an 89-90 always says that it must be aftermarket because the tank should be 15 gal. Everything looks original and the gauge is accurate. Any opinions?

Jeep built outside US? Hm, If I recall the 4 bangers had a 15 gallon tank and the 6 had the 20. Same tank, just a plastic filler plug, of course that might be the eary TJ's I am thinking about. You should have a dana 30 front and dana 35 rear (plastic drain plug on diff housing).

Thanks for your response. The VIN indicates the letter J. The VIN table indicates that with this letter designation it was assembled in Brampton, Ontario, Canada. The previous owner told me that the rear axle had a higher ratio for "highway driving" and better gas mileage. Could you order different axle ratios?

As for the axle, could be a different gear ratio for say a package, such as tires or rims or towing perhaps.. Might have the ratio stamped on the axle housing. My guess would be 3.07's or maybe 3.31's. Also there is a rumor that it might have a dana 44 axle, but who knows.

They're all 20 gallon tanks, the only difference is the length of the vent tube that tells the pump to kick off. There's a write up on here somewhere about how to trim your vent tube and instantly have a 20 gallon tank.
