all jeep wrangler yj's have a 20 gal fuel tank but depending on what package was bought it either has a 15 gal or 20 gal sending unit. the jeeps with the 15 gal sending unit have a 9" long filler neck stuck down in the tank that prevents it from filling up past 15 gal... this was chryslers way have saving a few bucks. u can remove the filler neck and cut it down to about 2-3" to access the full 20 gal tank but if you have a 15 gal sending unit it your gauge will read full until you get down to 13-14 gals.

Actually, not all YJs have a 20, mine has a 15, and I cannot do the filler neck mod, Sorry.

Unless it was modded, 2.5 (4cyl.) have the 15 gal. tank and 4.2, 4.0 (6cyl.) have the 20 gal. tank. The 15 gal. tanks are steel. The 20 gal. tanks are either poly or steel depending on the vendor at the time of production.

The newer 2.5s had 20g poly tanks.

Yeah I modded the 15 gallon poly tank on my 2.5 to a 20 gallon. I think all the fuel pumps are the same for the poly tanks. It is the sending units that are different.

Ok so if the fuel pump is the same for both tanks why does the parts store want to know which size tank i have? Should I get the one for the 20 gallon tank? or should i just pull the tank to see if its the poly tank?

That makes sense now with some of the confusion regarding certain years and types of tanks. Good to know.

It will be plastic. Double check with a magnet and you'll know for sure. But, some 20 gal tanks are poly and some are steel.

Did any of the 1993 4.0L's come with a 15 gal tank or 20gal tanks with a 15 gal sending unit and 9" filler neck?

Hmmm.... this accurately describes my '93 as I have put 18 gallons in it and yes, it does stay full for quite a while before dropping the needle. For once, a PO did a good thing!

Hi all

Thanks for the Quadratech link. Im gonna drop the tank this weekend. Has anyone ever cut an access panel out of the floor to get to the fuel pump? Once I get the tank out I may consider doing this just in case i need to do this again.

Help!
I have a YJ with a 15 gal tank, and can't seem to find the right size vent hose and filler hose. All of the hoses seem to be made for 20 gal tanks. The hoses for the 20 gal didn't fit. Any suggestions on where to find the right hoses?
