funky steering noise (fluid?)

Started up the Jeep this morning and was navigating getting out of a parking lot when I noticed a noise any time I turn the wheel.



It's rhythmic and sounds like when steam is suddenly released in short bursts. No horrific metal or grinding noises. Co-workers are betting I'm low on power steering fluid. I'm going to investigate when I get home...any advice?

Maybe low and sucked air bubbles into the pump? If it does look low and you decide to top it off, jack up the front and turn the wheel back and forth stop to stop 10 times or so to purge any air out of the pump BEFORE you start it.

anyway to do this without a jack? I am garage-less and therefore have not had the space to start acquiring basic equipment.

Bleeding the power steering is as easy as starting up the car and immediately turning it off. Wait a minute until the bubbles in the reservoir are gone or almost gone. Then start it up and turn the wheel quickly lock to lock and shut back off. Alternate both steps a couple of times, until the whining stops.

The repeated starting and stopping ensures that the air bubbles getting expelled from the return line into the reservior don't get sucked back down into the pump.

So I may have air bubbles in the pump.

This is what I think I need to do (please correct me):
1. Check around tires on the off chance something is rubbing
2. Check power steering fluid reservoir for fluid level
3. Start engine, turn off immediately. Observe reservoir for any bubbles (approx. 1 minute)
4. Start engine, rotate wheel to both extremes, turn engine off.
*at this point if the air has risen from the pump, do I need to re-evaluate fluid levels?*
5. Repeat #3 and 4 until noise stops.

If you park on something slippery you can crank the wheel stop to stop with the engine off to purge air out. Soft sand, wet grass, mud, etc... Jacking it up is the preferred method, but not the only one.

Yeah definitely recheck fluid level after bleeding, although you will be keeping an eye on the reservoir during bleeding anyway. Just maintain it at the full mark. If level drops, it's an indicator that you're successfully getting rid of air. (unless of course you have a huge leak, which you'd probably know about by then) The method C.L. described would work as well.

When my engine is off I cannot crank the wheel, it locks. Turn it "on" but don't start the engine?
