Gas Filler Location

Hi guys I'm from the Tj forum. I've been thinking about doing a few relocation's of things and one was switching to a Yj style gas filler for my Tj. I have a few reasons; I want to do a comp cut soon but right now I just want to change it up. When I researched I never saw any Tj's switching to the Yj style, Only Yj's switching to Tj. Is there a reason for this? Whats your opinions on it?

I like it because the filler is hidden behind the plate. People can't see it and its got a big locking cap. But the thing I dont like about it is sometimes it can be a pain to get the fill nozzle in to fill the tank if you don't park close enough to the pump.

That wouldn't bother me to much, I just didn't know if there were any real problems with it

I think it's more of a preference thing. It's kinda neat having a hidden gas location. I like getting the funny looks from people when I stick the fuel nozzle behind the license plate.

I get it from younger people alot because they have never seen it before lol. I toyed with the idea of switching to the TJ style but I decided to just leave it the way it is.

I am planning on moving my filler neck above were I did my comp cut on the driver side. but my filler is kinda in the stock yj position. It sucks to fill up.

Comp cut is short for competition cut. Basically what it is, is cutting off all the body behind the rear tires, but not cutting into the cargo area, just the sides.

Its not too bad filling up a YJ in CA at the pump but some pumps do bump against the taillight which is kind of annoying. Its also not a real sharp angle downward at the filler neck so you get some backsplash once its full. I'm used to filling up then using the windshield washer scrubber to clean off the spilled gas from the paint below the filler (under the license plate) almost every time.

The tougher part is filling up with a gerry can or similar gas can. I have to use a long funnel for that to extend beyond the taillight and get a better downward angle.

Don't do it, I was fiing up today and it got full and the pump kicked off and the nozzle fell out and gas went everywhere I was kinda mad. Lol the way gas prices are these days that can't be happening... I usually hold the nozzle with my knee against the jeep but didn't for some reason today, live and learn.

Nobody else has had the idea to flip the license plate bracket upside down? The PO of mine did, and its super easy to fill. No awkward angles or anything.

?? Not sure what angles this would help. Seems to me it would hurt and get in the way of a better downward angle. It would stick out even farther than the taillight when flipped up and bump into it when opened. Stock is for it to flip down which seems to me the better choice.

Pump flying out when unnattended IS another drawback. That happens to me every now and again but I still risk it and leave it unattended.

I don't know about you but I did flush mount LED tail lights. Hitting the lights isn't really a concern for me haha. Makes complete sense to me, you would adjust it higher than the amount it would get in the way before you drill the holes though I hope.

Hitting the light doesn't matter. It doesn't mess with the angle at all. And the nozzle fits right in. It's a great setup. Here's a couple pics.

I get the visual and thanks for the pics. I don't have an issue with the holder bottom mounted getting in the way when pump filling but maybe this improves that - I can push it down plenty far enough now not to interfere with anything.

The problem I might have with the top mount setup is getting a gerry can in there at a good angle. With the top mount the license plate is sticking out farther than the taillight and its even less angle to get a filler or funnel in there at a good downward angle. You have to get it in under the license plate with that setup yet still be able to hold the can above the filler for gravity to do its thing. I wouldn't want that for me personally.

Always good to hear other opinions and options though!

That is true. It is possible to get a can nozzle in there, but it can be a pain. That's why I always have a funnel with me if I have a can. A flexible funnel works great, but I carry a normal one that's about 15" long.

I like the switch to the flip up. And really, how often are you needing to fill with a gerry can? Couple bolts/screws and the bracket is off. I'd take it off in either position just to make it easier. I hate wrestling with that thing. If I had a nickel for all the cuts I got from that thing flipping back on me......

You've got to drill some new holes to mount it too right? I guess I don't see the point. The flip-down configuration has never caused me any pump filling issues (other than smacking me a few times too!)

I thought you'd have to drill new holes, too. The Jeep had stock paint on it when I got it, and it didn't have other holes. Even when I sanded it down to paint, I didn't see where the holes had been filled. I haven't been able to check out how a stock YJ is setup, but you might be able to do a relocation bracket so you don't have to drill.
