Gas millage question

I have an 89 YJ, with the big 6. I asked my mechanic what i should be getting for gas millage (since I haven't taken apart my dash to fix my gauges yet). He figured 12-16. What I have been doing is filling up every 150 miles and its consistently using 7 gallons to get 150 miles.

SO I am getting about 20 miles per gallon or more???... Im not upset with that, but I dont trust it for some reason.

What should I be getting for millage? And i should be safe extrapolating that millage out and believe that I should get near 300 miles a tank (assuming I have a regular 15 gallon tank)?

My 89 YJ 5spd. 4.2 with the 3.07 axle gets 20-22 hwy and at least 17-18 city. Your 4.2 has a 20 gal poly tank unless it was replaced at one point with a steel 15 gal. Do a magnet or tap test on it and you'll know. A lift or over size wheels/tires will inpact your mpg. An auto will give you 1-2 mpg less.

I have a 90 with the 4.2 and I get around 20 mpgs running back and forth to work every day. I got 26 on a long highway trip before. I have a 20 gallon tank and usually run it till I get to 280 or 290 before I fill it. I did go to 306 one time and had 5 gallons still in the tank when I filled it. I don't really trust the fuel gauge so I don't like to push it. You should be fine. just don't be out in the middle of no where when you are getting close to 300!

i drive less then 10 miles each way to anything. i live on an island with 4 miles of 55mph road, none of which i use doing my less then 10 mile run to anything! i would like to see what it would get on the free way.

so, as far as the gas tank goes, if i throw a magnet up under the back end, is there a metal tank protector that will give me a false positive?
