Gas smell inside

My 92 YJ has a soft top and hard doors. When I am driving around for a little bit with the windows rolled up it gets a gassy smell in the passenger compartment. I also have trouble filling up with gas because the pump keeps cutting off. I live in the Dallas area and I have noticed when I am away from town the pumps don't cut off as much. Is this a problem with a vent for the gas tank? What is the best way to diagnose and fix this problem? It's a 2.5L. Any help is appreciated.

I came across this problem when I first got my jeep! The gas pump would not stop when it was full, so gas would gush out!! I smelled gas in my Jeep for almost a week, then when I fill up it would happen again. I took it to a dealership and they replaced the whole gas tank for free, apparently there have been a lot of complaints about this! Also, check your gas gap, or take your Jeep in to get it inspected. Could be a fuel damper or filler neck that has a leak! Best of luck friend

How long ha ve you had the problem? It could be the PO had converted the tank to 20 gallons and as a result may have cut the vent tube too short. I have a similar problem once in while at some stations with the automatic nozzle not shutting off.
If it just started there could be a problem with the vent hose.
The gasoline smell could also be coming from the carbon filter under the hood, check the lines there for cracks or damage.

Where is this carbon filter? I have had this issue since I got it. I don't recall ever putting more than 15 gallons in it.

There should be a coffee can looking canister under the the area of the ECM/washer tank area on the drivers side.
I think the proper name for is evaporative canister....emission stuff
