gas tank leaking

95 wrangler 4cyl. out of no where today I noticed gas leaking down off of the skid plate and was making a little puddle on the driveway. Do these tanks rust out alot? I put 7 gallons of gas in it today so im wondering if that has something to do with it.

Could be about 6 other things than a hole in the gas tank. Which seems rare in itself.

My gas tank has no skid plate but the rest of the undercarriage does.
Is yours like this?

Your tank may be poly so it my not rust. I would check your filler hoses. They are bad at splitting and cracking...as well as the lines coming from the top of the tank to your filter.

The more typical problem is the gasket between the fuel pump assy and the gas tank. Something like $25 gasket only available at the dealership unless buying the fuel pump assy ($235). Rubber gasket with plastic sleeves where the assy screws go through.

yeah. it was I was on a turnpike unawares and noticed I was getting low on gas. and in southern kasas-noth oklahoma there is nothing out there but cows. I smelt gas but didn't think to much. was kinda scared to stop. anyways. there is a j shaped bracket that holds the taipipe. it broke. keep checking yours or better yet reinforce it. I dunno why my 89 has a poly tank then. hmmm but then there is a lot on my jeep that is a head scratcher

My 88 YJ fuel tank leaks when I park on an upward slant. It comes out pretty steadily to...

Anyone have ideas for that?

Thanks!

I have a 95, 2.5 liter also and I am having intermittent engine sputter so I figured it was the fuel pump. Instead of dropping the whole tank I cut a hole ( surprised I didn't blow up ) through the bed to get to the whole sending unit. My unit was a rusted mess and the 8 bolts that hold the unit in place were a pain to get out. But, there are 2 nipples that come out of the sending unit and attach to the rubber fuel line. One of those 2 nipples had a pin size hole rotted in it so I ordered a entire assembly and dropped it in. It costs $154. The pump itself is like a $100 so you might as well just replace the whole thing. Also get 6 feet of fuel injection tubing to run from the new sending unit to the metal lines on the frame. They are 5/16. I will post a link to the unit I got ( 15 and 20 gallon tanks use the same sending unit ). Its made by Spectra and one of the metal nipples coming out of the unit ( there are 2 of them ) is 5/16. The other is 3/8, so unless the metal line attached to your frame is that size you will need a 5/16-3/8 fuel joiner. I just used a piece of metal piping from the old sending unit that I cut off with a hacksaw. You will also need 8 new bolts and to hold it in place. Since those tanks are poly they like to warp so get yourself inch long bolts ( I got 1" long phillips heads and washers ) that way after you drop the new unit into the tub thats inside the tank you can use the longer bolts to cinch it up tight. Dont forget new hose clamps also.
