Gauges acting strangely

The temp gauages on my 87 wrangler are acting very strangley, before the engine statrs it says 180 then when the engine runs it goes up to 260 could this be a temp sending sensor and if so where would I find the location of it. 258 straight cyl. and answers are very appreciated thank you. you can also email me directly at henrysteeneck@sbcglobal.net

it's on the rear of the engine by the firewall. right behind the valve cover.

Yeah, it's easy to find. Has one wire going to it, it's green on mine (4 cyl) coming out of the middle of the firewall.

(btw, take your email down, spammers can EASILY get this from any open forum, and you're screwed)

If your cooling system hasn't been flushed in awhile, that will cause fluctuations in heat readings. When I flush mine out, it registers perfectly for a season or so. Right now it needs a complete cleanout so that's my project for tomorrow.
