Gear swap question

Hey all, I recently destroyed a dana 35 w/4.56 and detroit w/g2 shafts. Housing bent and locker started doing some crazy $hit. I might of gotten it too hot welding my wrap bar on.

Anyway, I have a spare 35 sitting under the jeep now running no front driveshaft cause its 4.10 in the 35. Without putting anymore money into it, what can I reuse to swap in my 4.56 r&p while I build an 8.8 on the side. I want to go wheeling bad.
Guess a better question would be what do I need to get the r&p in there with the least money possible?

If the r&p are in good condition and if you are fortunate enough to salvage the carrier complete with bearings, then just catch oil, swap carrier, ring, and pinion; leave bearings and shims alone, use the bearings with their familiar races, don't swap pinion races in the housing on the good d35. But keep the matching carrier races with the carrier bearings you use if you have to swap berrings. The main idea is to maintain the current setup with the appropriate shims if you have used on the 456d35. When you're done, put the old oil back in it. If it's got metal in it, strain it through a towel. It mights moan a little at 60+mph because its not axle housing specific setup, but no reason you can get several thousand miles out of it. IMO Ford 8.8 is much easier to build right.

Thanks for the reply, I actually plan to just run the open carrier thats already in the good 35. So its just a ring and pinion swap. The detroit may no longer be functional. Housing was bent and shaft was bent. Chances are the detroit is effed too right? I 've already pulled the guts out of the bent one and cut everything off.

If you have the good parts and play your cards right, you will only have money in a little rtv to seal the cover (And yoke splines if thats your thing).

Not knowing exactly whats good and what aint there is no way of telling you what id do. The first thing for you to do is to gather an actual damage assessment on the "trashed" d35's components.

If you can, swap the pinion and entire carrier (From bearing race to race) without ever separating the ring gear from the carrier. This carrier w/ the desired gears is already shimmed (correct shims on each side are held on inside the carriers pressed bearings) to run that ring and pinion it was with. If the carrier is garbage just swap your bearings, races, shims, and gears to the open carrier. be sure to keep what comes off each side with the side it goes to. Your pinion depth should be set as the pinion shims are held in place by the pressed inner bearing.

Just use your good parts and your head and it will all be fine. reading gear patterns is not rocket science. We make the ratio decisions and setup way harder than it has to be. Have confidence, its just a gear.

So everything turned out pretty good. I was able to reuse everything including the crush sleeve. Just bought a new seal and added .004 to the ring gear side of the carrier and was able to get a good pattern. Had it out this weekend ripping the dunes and been driving to and from work for a week now. Thanks again
