Got Stuck, Now Trans Problems

My little brother and I were riding down a trail in a 91 wrangler with the 4.0 auto and got stuck. It wasn't anything crazy or anything just a nice little trail outside pheonix. We then put the truck in 4 wheel drive and the wheels did nothing but spin. When he let off the gas we heard a clunk and the truck wouldn't move It will not shift into any gears except park. All other gears it will roll just not move until you put it in neutral then it won't move. Checked for vacuum leaks and anything broken and didn't find anything. It has 126k miles on it. It won't move even in 4 wheel drive. What could be wrong with her? I don't really have the money right now to take it somewhere and I am very mechanically inclined BUT I had to fly back to okla today so I can't tear it down I can just give my brother suggestions of what could be wrong.

I was always told to leave it in 2 wheel drive until you can not go and then put it into 4 wheel to get out. The only time I got stuck and could not get out was when I did not follow that rule.

What you did or did not do and why are your business. From your description my guess would be that Four wheel drive had failed BEFORE you needed it. Second guessing it is not going to get it fixed now. I gathered from your statement that you were outside of Phoenix AZ when this happened. If that is the case there are some really good people in the Phoenix area who are Jeepers who should be able to help you out.

it has been raining alot in pheonix and has made everything muddy. It made a cluck-clunk-clunk then nothing. Will not move. Will roll in every gear except park. I don't know what is wrong with it but it doesn't sound good.
