hard to turn key

my grand father recently gave me a 89 jeep wrangler 6 cylinder 4.2 l after he did some major restoration work to it. anyway like the day after he gave it to me i tried to start it and the key turns into the start position the seat belt and break lights come on and what not but to get the engine to turn over i really have to force it further.at first i told him it wouldn't start and he said just putt some muscle into it and i did and it started over the past few days it has gotten harder and harder to turn the key to the start position when i asked him he just blows it off like that's just how it is but its gotten to the point where my fingers have blisters.he did say there's a way to adjust it but wouldn't give any advice on how to do it. so guys is there any way for me to fix this without putting lots of money into it.

if you have a pair of clippers try putting some of that machine oil into the key hole and round the outer shaft and let it sit for a minute.

If it's a new key and the edges are sharp, it just needs to be buffed a bit by a key maker. Or you could do it yourself, but don't alter any of the shape. Buffing it makes it like an older key and it fits easier into the ignition. At least that's what my locksmith told me.

Spray a bunch of WD40 INTO the key hole..... let sit for a minute or two andf see if that does not loosen it up...... Had IDENTICAL issue with my 89 YJ and that is how the locksmith cured mine.....

I was told to use graphite for the Keys and locks. one it is dry and two it is slippery as all get out.

I had to do that to my 89. After the wd-40 I used graphite. It was fine for about 6 months and then I had to have the cylinder replaced. Had a mobile locksmith do it. He took off the steering wheel and replaced the cylinder in about 5 minutes. Now it's fine.
