Hardtop paint?

Greetings fellow YJers... I have a hardtop on my YJ that may or may not have come from a CJ... In any case, it's needs paint. It's made out of fiberglass except for the rear flip-up door, which is metal. So I have a question: Can I sand down the entire top and paint it myself with rattle cans (spray paint, like rustoleum or krylon) or does it need to be professionally painted?

Thanks!

I painted the entire jeep myself, (1993 YJ) But I have painted 30 vehicles before. If you do the can spray paint make sure you buy a great quality paint otherwise it will look bad. Airless spayer or the gravity feed sprayer works well

I bought a Can of flat black rustolium And used my air spray gun And just sprayed it on. I didnt sand it first.. Just wiped the whole thing with a cleaner. That was last fall and its still perfect as of now. Was gray.

I've done both.... Painted it myself (yes, be sure it's clean and you have good paint) and had it professionally painted after a wreck a couple of years ago.... The dealer clear coated it after painting... that was the only difference....

Good luck with your paint job.... I say go for it.....you can always re-do it...

Scuff it up with a Scotch Brite pad to make paint stick.

With painting, you get what you pay for. Spray painting it yourself can turn out good but it really depends on your prep and skill with the paint.

I guess the most important thing is, don't leave your fiberglass without some kind of protectant coating. If you strip it Prime/Paint it as soon as possible.

If you prep and tape it yourself body shops ussually wont charge you an arm and leg to paint it.

The absolute best thing you can do for longevity is to strip the top completely, then get it primed with 2k Epoxy Primer which will seal it, then paint.

Oh and if you decide to strip it using chemicals, be sure to use a fiberglass stripper, regular autmotive paint stripper will eat through the fiberglass.
