Hey guys, I have a new '95 wrangler, and it came with the soft top/soft doors. The top and doors are new, but it was raining today, and I think it rained harder inside the jeep than it was raining outside. I have the opportunity to trade a rifle for a top in good shape, but not sure if the hard doors are available or not. The rifle has a current market value of about $500. I also found a top at the local you-pull-it yard, and can get the top and doors for $220. The top isn't damaged, but is missing the rear glass and frame, and both side windows are broken. Also, the frame for the triangular window on the driver door is bent, and the triangle glass is broken. I'm thinking that it would be pretty expensive to replace the glass and fix the door frame, so I'm leaning toward trading the gun for the other top. Can tops be found cheaper, or does $500-$600 sound like a fairly good deal for a top without doors?
Thanks for any input!
Hey Darren, sounds like the top you're describing needs a lot of work, and the glass is not cheap. If there is any way you could make it until spring (when everyone goes topless) you can get a really good deal on a top that needs nothing, for a great price! The winter is the worst time to buy a top. Thats when they get the premium prices! Like trying to get a cheap boat in the summer. If you want the best deal I would wait. HANNAH.
That sounds like good advice. I'm down in South Georgia, so winter here usually only lasts a few weeks. I haven't even taken time to look at my soft top to see why it is leaking, but I'm fairly sure it wouldn't take much to get it sealed up properly. I'm a little hesitant on putting a hard top on the jeep anyway. Everyone I have ever talked to with a hard top says that once you put it on, you'll never take it off. Any ideas on what a decent top and doors should cost in the middle of topless season?
$500-$700 sounds like fair winter market price around here during the cold months. When you are shopping used hard tops & full metal doors, be sure to check the seals on them. I bought a used '95 about a year ago & now have a small fortune in the top/doors alone because I replaced all seals etc. I can say that the Jeep is well insulated and I have no drafts now that I have put a little time & money in it.
I bought a hard top WITH both hard doors for $500 earlier this year. No issue with either of them. I would suggest CL or EBAY...... and bide your time until YOUR deal shows up. Do not overlook buying a WHOLE jeep either..... I did that too......just to get hard tops and doors......
I have been cruising craigslist, but hadn't thought about ebay. Is shipping crazy expensive on tops? (I'm sure it would depend on where it is being shipped.) The only real complaint that I have the soft top and soft doors, is that the tops of the doors flap open about an inch above about 50mph. I think I can live with most of the other flopping sounds, but the doors are driving me crazy. Is there any fix for this?
I got real lucky,$175 for an early YJ top and rust free doors.the one wing window is gone replaced with plexi.I had to reinstall the rear windows. 2 days before that got a CJ7 top for 50 bucks .no doors .CL is the place .sold the other top for 400 last week,I did rhino line the top and sealed all windows and sunroof,no doors.
I continue to gobble up all the tops I can in the summer .and recondition them.
