HEEEEEY YJ Guys! Auto Tranny Issue

My painter at work has been having an issue with his 89 YJ with the auto tranny and I told him I'd post up on here and see what you guys thought...

He said the problem has been like this for years, but it's kind of annoying and he'd like to get it fixed...during the 2-3 shift, it likes to really wind out the gear before it finally shifts into third gear. Sometimes if he lets his foot off the gas for a second it'll shift and other times it seems to have no effect and he's just gotta wind it out and let it shift on its own.

My guess was maybe either a speed sensor if they have them or maybe a tv cable being out of adjustment...but I'm not at all familiar with something nearly as old as I am so I figured I'd ask those who are.

So does this sound like an easy fix such as what I'm thinking above...or does it sound more like it's an expensive internal problem within the tranny?

Appreciate the help!

I am in no way a tranny mechanic or expert but in my past cituations with other autos other than jeeps these symtoms are common of an internal expensive tranny issue if not a recommened rebuild if the problems get more servere.

I think he said he's had it changed once before and it didn't help...I'll run that past him just in case, I also did mention that if it was filled with the incorrect fluid, that could also be contributing to the issue.
