Just some simple stuff I can think of:

Check the 4wd
Check for rust (When i got my 94 2.5L it had **** tons of rust on the frame, don't know if this is the case with alot of jeeps... or just mine.)

i would 1st see what you are planning on doin with that jeep....i have a 95 2.5L and once i added a lift and bigger tires i dont get out of my own road and am curently starting a 350 swap..

check Trans as well, mines weak and will pop out of gear here and there

i wouldn't limit yourself to just a 2.5L look for a nice 4L as well.

rust on the frame and floor pans, look for how it shifts and if it is smooth
