Help, No Drive Shaft!

Hey guys Im new to the Jeep world, I just picked up a 92YJ with no front drive shaft. I was wondering why it might be like that? Do they tend to snap easy, is it common among jeeps? Also I want to know if the 4WD works, how can I find out? Finally where can I pick up one of these drive shafts (whats a reasonable price for a used one) and what other parts might I need? Thanks in advanced!

Not sure why they would have pulled the front driveshaft, I never had any issues with mine on my '91. If they have a HUGE lift on it, maybe they didn't want to deal with modifying/replacing it and just pulled it out.

As far as seeing if the 4wd works, you can put it in 4wd and crawl under the Jeep to see if the front output yoke on the transfer case turns. It should be "locked" at that point. But the easiest way would be to replace the front driveshaft and see...

Sorry, don't have any idea what a used front shaft would cost. I know that aftermarket heavy duty ones are around $350, so should be less than that.

Good luck!

If you have to ask what it is or what it does, you don't need it, and you will need help to install it!

the stock drive shafts in the front were crazy thin and bent easily. he may have trashed it. i had one built for it seems like $200 or $300 that is pretty beefy. if you have the CAD and are not locked, ill give you my stocker if you'll pay shipping. i couldnt use it b/c im spooled (so it always spun) and the vibrations were excessive (its not perfectly straight---kissed the rocks a few times )

do like the other guys said. put it into 4wd. crawl underneath and check to see if transfer case front output moves, it should not.

somewhere along the line someone may have changed axles and not matched the gear ratios.

lift the front end off the ground turn one tire see if the other turns. if it does maybe the CAD is stuck and they had the same vibration as having the spool.

try lifting only one tire then turn your yoke on the front axle, does it turn freely without any noise, does catch or snag, maybe some gear teeth are broke?

get the used one for sure and then test it.

JeeperMan: No it doesn't have a lift its stock height. I put it in 4wd and the yoke still spun freely. Do you know why the 4wd shifter is really hard to change gears or are all jeeps like that?

WhiteBuffalo: Wow... yeah I'll take it off your hands, I cant spend $300 on a drive shaft right now. I just bought the jeep and school comming up I really appreciate you giving the DS to me THANKS! I live in South Texas your not too far from me, area code is 78526 let me know how much the shipping is whe you get a chance!

Scumby: What does CAD mean? LOL! Sorry! I'll lift it tomorrow and see whats happens. It doesn't make any cracking noises when I'm driving it or when I spin the yoke. i hope the gears are good!

Sorry about all the questions guys, Im a newb and I just want to get some 4wd action asap! Thanks for the help guys I greatly appreciate it keep the advice coming I need it!

no prob, give me a week or so to get it out, kinda hectic right now. its not perfect, but itll work fine for you. the only time you feel the vibe is when you get to 40 mph or so (in 4wd). i doubt youll be going that fast in 4wd on the beach

do you have the 4 or 6 cyl? if you have the 4, theres a tranny for sale on san antonio craigslist for 100 bucks. i was thinking of getting it just to have as a spare, but hell, you wont be able to fix a clutch for 100 bucks, you might check it out and just say to hell with it.

center axle disconnect. the passenger side has 2 axles shafts, i guess you could consider it three if you consider the outer stub shaft.
