Help please!

I just bought a sweet '94 Jeep Wrangler but it's got some problems so I've been told to come here.

First thing i noticed was the engine sounds like a diesel - that can't be good.
The oil gauge is reading 80+ and there are traces of oil and junk in the line running to the air filter. I cleaned the line but that should only be a quick fix

It looks like a big oil leak coming from the passenger side going all the way to the back of the engine but there is only two small puddles (quarter size) on the ground?

When I put it in gear it jerks and I can hear clanking. Could it be a worn out U joint?

The radio stopped working 3/31/2012 and today 4/1/2012 the dash lights/brake lights all wouldn't work

Any help guys???

Thanks
Adam

Are you sure it's not a diesel?

On a serious note, it sounds like one of your sensors is bad, or your lifters are going downhill. Or there's no oil in the crank.

My oil gauge reads anywhere from 60-80 at highway speeds, some 3000rpm.

It might be blowby. Rev your engine to around 2000rpm while under the hood and watch the oil cap closely.

Is it an automatic? Manual?

Pull the dash apart and check your wiring. Check EVERYTHING, contacts, fuses, grounds, etc.

More information required:

What size engine?
What transmission?

Someone may have put 30-40- 50 wt oil to disguise the problem. Do a fresh oil change 10w30 or 40 and a good filter. I use Fram. Oil bypass may be stuck open in old filter. Which engine is she?

She's a 6 cylinder automatic
And the oil gauge it only reads 80+ and takes a good two - three minutes to drop after I turn her off

Im funny change the oil today. Is Fram a good brand? I've heard different reports

Thanks again I'll keep y'all updated

there are people that have had problems with older entry level fram filters, but the reports of putting it on and the engine self-destructing the next day are a little exaggerated

they are cheap, which is why walmart stocks them

I have 3 4.0's here in other Jeeps, and one of the ZJ's has more valve noise when first starting-up than the others, and I guess it wouold sond like a diesel, but they all have some valve noise to them. The one I am talking about has 275,000 miles on it, and I am not changing a thing.
It has done it for the last 2 years, and runs awesome. The oil pressure stays about 80psi too.
As far as oil goes I use Rotella in all my 6 cyl's, change it every 5,000 miles and have never lost one yet. Even after 350,000+ miles. I know Rotella is made for diesel engines, but the nickel in it helps smooth scratches in the cylinders, and is what I like the best about the oil, and it has worked very well for me.

I don't live in a cold climate though, and up north I wouldn't recommend using thick oil in the winter.
I use Napa Gold oil filters, and always have. With all that being said, mine doesn't sound like a diesel to me, but to some it might.
On my 4cyl I use 10w30 Napa brand (Valvolene). This is working ok so far
