Help Starting Problem 1988 YJ

I have a 1988 YJ that won't start. Engine cranks good battrey just replaced because it was dead. Has 1/2 of fuel. The carb looked like no fuel was been delivered in the throat of the carb. But it will fire up if you pour a small amount of gas in carb. So, I changed the fuel filter thinking it may have been clogged. Since the throat of the looked like no fuel was being delivered. So, while it was off I cranked the engine to see if I was getting any fuel flow. I only got a trickle. So, should I have gotton a steady stream with pressure? Does the 1988 YJ have an electric fuel pump? If it does have an electric fuel pump where is the fuse to check it?

Any ideas on where and what to look at? Any help is appreciated!!!

USAF Chief

A manual pump has a rubber diaphram it will disinagrate, threfore you will loose feul pressure. And If its 20 yrs old Its safe to assume that it needs replaced. 1 more thing check the oil for gas odor ,if it is there do not run engine until you ve changed oil and filter .gasoline will wash out bearings

Well I too thought it was a mechanical fuel pump. I went to Advance Auto Parts to get a price on a fuel pump. I was quoted it was $149.00 I asked to see it and it was electric fuel pump. Maybe I should call another auto parts store.

Does it keep running after you dump a little fuel in it or just starts and dies?
My cherokee did the same thing, on occasion I had to pour a little fuel or starting fluid down it to get it to start, but it would keep going after that, turned out to be nothing more than a vacuum leak. Fixed that and it hasn`t happened since, even though its been 3 or 4 months I still carry a little gas just in case it ever happens again.
When it runs does your idle fluctuate?

Did you follow fuel lines to see if it goes back to tank or if it runs to fuel pump
on the side of engine?

I got into it last night and it does have a mechanical fuel pump. I ordered one and will pick it up this afternoon. I had went by Advance Auto before all of this to see if they had one. The lady behind the parts counter must have punched in 1998 Jeep Wrangler 4.2L and not 1988. Because what she brought out was an electric fuel pump. Anyway Advance Auto parts had one for $23.00 I am picking it up after work.

morphious,

You might be right on about the Carter carb.

I have changed the fuel pump. The pump is working check it by filling up a mason jar when I was cranking the engine. But,it still won't start, but it will try to fire up when you pour the gas from the mason jar into the carb then stop when the gas is gone. So, the g as is still good. Does any body know if the Carter 2BBL has a fuel shutoff solenoid? Where is it located? Can you just get only a fuel sutoff solenoid? I guess the next thing to is get the carb rebult.

Thoughts comments?

Hey Chief. When I bought ours (1990 4.2) it did the same thing. I tore the carb down and cleaned out every nook and cranny, ran welding cleaner tips through mains and low speed jets. Ran great not a hickup the only problem I have now is the choke doesn't come on. So I have to feather the throttle till it warms up.
I'm sure that all you need to do is rebuild it and clean it out. Or you can buy an aftermarket carb and do away with it.

Well I picked up acarb overhaul kit this pass weekend, and had one the mechanics at my work overhaul the carb for me. He saind the the carb was dirty and the fuel line inlet has a needle and seat on it was very dirty gane the rubber tip was stuck to the carb. The mechanic replaced them with the one in the carb overhaul kit.

FIXED: Rebuilt the carb found some trash in themain fule line on the card side. The fuel line after the filter. It runs great best since I 've own it. How working on two other problems one is with the parking brake light and the outer is an intermittance oil pressure gauge.

The switch for the parking brakes should be on the emergency brake mechanism on top. Oil pressure sender could be bad wire or connection at the sender, I had to clean the connection on mine, the senders are only a few bucks..
