Unhappy Help with charging system

There is a small box located on the passengers side, mounted to the fire wall, that is part of the charging system. A wire runs from the positive side of the battery to the box and a wire that runs from the box to the alternator.

It is on a 88yj with the 258..........

Got a picture? I'm having trouble picturing what you're talking about in my mind.

Jeep had a few oil leaks when I bought it and the dip stick wasn't in all the way, which explains the "sludge". I have fixed all but one small leak and there is no point in cleaning bay until I know engine is dry...........
