Help with my new jeep

hi everybody, so recently i bought my first jeep and just to give you guys some background info on it an we'll see if you guys can help me out. Its a 89 4.2l carbonated wrangler with 108k miles and just recently had a new carb put in it. The problem i am having is rough starting and it wanting to turn off on me when i do not have my foot on the gas. I believe its due to the air cleaner the guy i bought it from put on it. It an edelbrock aircleaner 10' in diameter and 21/4 inch tall with a 2' element on the bottom and it is not fitting on the black plastic plate that sits on top of the carb. i think that it is letting in to much air causing the air to fuel ratio to be thrown off. i know little to none about carbs but i have been told by O'Rileys and Autozone that this is my problem. The only thing is is that i can not find an aircleaner that will fit on there properly. So does anyone one have any opinions?

Thanks guys

I don't think this is your problem. Because your carb should run with your air cleaner off also. What I suggest is taking your air cleaner off and finding the idle screw on your carb. It will be on the driversside and it stops your carb from closing up or.. not enough gas. You should tighten it until it idles at the rpms you want. The screw will be around your throttle linkage (the stuff that twists on your carb when you press down the peddle)

It is not carbonated. It is carbureted. Don't know if that was a typo on your end.

Hey bud I have an 88 yj. And one of the issues is curburator and computer. Have u tried the butter by pass. It actually worked for me. She doesn't act like turning off anymore. But still needs a bit tweaking. Look it up. Trust me it works

I did the same but they are going to charge u to keep it at settings because of em missions. It's a simple process. I did alot of searching just to figure it out. U can also switch to webber carb that will also fix issues but that's a 499 issue lol

It's a nutter bypass. get a friend who knows a little about carbs to tune the idle screw(to increase idle rpm's) and maybe the A/F screw(air fuel) to enrich the air fuel ratio so it may be closer to the ideal 14:1 ratio. some like it a bit richer fuel mix(there goes the mpg). hope this helps..Driller
