Help with turn signal switch replacement!

Hi all, I'm in the process of replacing the turn signal switch in my 89 Wrangler 4.2 auto and all's fine until I come to actually removing the old switch from the steering column. It seems I need to remove the cowl (plastic cylinder thing) from around the column but as the stalk for the auto shifter lever is there (and it seems like there's no method of removing it) I can't pull the old wires/connector through as it's all too tight a gap. If anyone's tackled this I'd be grateful for advice. Very frustrating. Cheers.

We replaced the turn signal switch in our 95 Wrangler. If you're talking about the turn signal stalk, it really does just pull off. We overnighted some WD-40 on it and it popped right off. I looked at Chilton's manual for 87-08 Wrangler and it doesn't even acknowledge there is a shift lever on the column. Sorry.

Turn the connector sideways and tape it to the wires, then it will pull through.

Hi thanks for the responses. In the end I disconnected the wires from the connector then pulled it through but did as you said when fitting the new switch and taped the wires to the connector and that pulled through OK. Good to have done it but still no brake lights. Need to change the brake light switch next I guess.
