Help yj 4X high

What causes 1990 yj 4x high to pop in and out or slip?

Linkage adjustment, bad cad vacuum motor, bad vacuum lines, bad shift fork in cad, bad locking collar for axles in front, bad axle splines. That should be most of them.

Is the shift boot messing with the shifter any body lift issues that may have upset linkage adjustment???

Start with checking the rubber @ the shift boot, I would go to linkage next. Its free to try. Loosen the adjustment bolt so it can slide on the bar, put a drop or 2 of oil or spray some pb or wd on it so it can move freely. Then put the shifter into 4 low, tighten it up, start up the jeep and test it out. If same problem persists try it again but put it in 4 hi. If it doesn't work at least it didn't cost you anything. Good luck

Exactly what is happening when you say pop out. Do it pop out of 4 hi and stay in 2wd or does the jeep stop completely? Does it make any noises? Any info you have will be helpful

Is this in hard ground or while turning? When you put it in 4wd it locks the front and rear riffs together with no differential between the two. And when you try to turn the front and rear travel at different speeds from one anothet

Thank you for the help. I took the front driveshaft off the back connecting to transfer case. The jeep will not roll forward, when you try to roll forward the driveshaft is still turning with the front wheels. It acts like the front end is still engaged. I'm not sure if i should take inspection plate off the front end to see if a gear is broke and lodged in a way to keep it from rolling. The jeep will roll in reverse only.

Up well you got to start looking somewhere.

Take the inspection cover if the diff and then check the cad housing in the passenger side.
