Help!!! YJ with Blown Engine, need advice

Hey all, new here, and looking for advice. I have been working on old Ford all my life, and finally picked up a Jepe my dad bought new. He took care of the body, never had it off road (don't ask why....), but neglected it mechanically. I only got to drive it for about 1,000 miles and the rods started knocking.... Now my 12 year old daughter claimed the Jeep to be her's when she turns 16, and I am ok with it, so I plan to keep this calm.
I plan to run 31 or maybe 32 inch all terrain tires on it, maintain the stock front axle, maybe convert the rear to the Dana 44 from a Cherokee, or an 8.8 from an Explorer.

My real question is this...... Do I retain the stock 2.5 and rebuild it, maybe add a header, 4.0 TB, and a couple little things that route, or do I convert to either a 4.0L injected engine from a cherokee, or maybe convert it to a 4.3 Chev V-6?

Not too worried about the mechanical part of the conversion, I am confortable with any of it (though there may be some questions asked), just looking more at practicality.... Who has done the conversion? Was it worth it? You know, all the standard bs....

Sorry for the long post, just wanted to get the basics out there.... We plan to make another trip out Moab and over to Colorado again late winter/ early spring... did it earlier this year with an Explorer, but want the Jeep for the next trip.

Thank You!!!!

I would stick to an I-6 4.0 from the cherokee. I have heard much mixed reviews about a chevy swap, right now I am dealing with a nearly blown engine. I'm getting mine rebuilt, possibly stroked. My straight six lasted me 200,000+ thousand miles with one tune up, oil changes every 5,000 to 7,000 miles; occaisionaly more.

One thing to remember is that the AX5 transmission won't take much more than the 4 cylinder. Cheaper and quicker to go back with the 2.5L.

Keeping the 4cyl is definately the easiest and cheapest route, but who doesn't want more power. There was a guy here running the 4.3...where did he go. I think the 4.3 is a great motor to drop in a Jeep. Lots of performance parts available. Back it up with the Turbo 400 that they all came with.

I don't know if you guy's have heard of this place or not; Mantrans. It's out of FLA and they sell rebuilt tranny's. I got mine for $750 with no core charge because it was shipped to a dealership. This price included shipping. I found them on e-bay a couple of years ago and they did me right! mantrans.com I think it is. Hope this helps someone out.

If you stick with the 4 banger you won't have to worry about speeding tickets when your daughter grabs the keys!! It's not a bad little engine as long as you don't do alot of freeway driving.

Although come to think of it my wife did manage to get stopped last week in our 4 banger, 43 in a 25. Talked her way out of it like women tend to do.

I think you have to decide what your plans for the future of your rig are. I you think you will need the power in the future go ahead and do it now and back it up with a better trans. However you can not spend as much and just rebuild the 2.5 the do you power upgrades with gears. I run a 2.5 and an AX5, I put 5.89's in to solve my problems.

I put a mantrans tranny in mine and it shifts like buttah! I asked them if it was alright to run Redline MT in it due to the warranty and they had no problem with it. 8 months later...still shifts like buttah!
