High Idle Problem

Hey guys,
I have a 95 YJ 4.0 and every time i start it up my idle is extremely high, usually pushing 2200 or 2300. It does not matter if the engine is hot or cold, every time it cranks up it does the same thing. Im thinking that my problem is the throttle position sensor, but im not quite sure. Does anyone else think the same thing, or do you think it could be something different. Please let me know.

Thank you.

Hey Espencer....it's supposed to idle high for a few seconds to build up the vacuum pressure...however, the rpms that you're running seems a little high, which is indicative of a vacuum leak somewhere....and another option is the idle air control....it's on the side of the throttle body. It has a plunger in it that gets covered with a crud (for lack of a better description) over a period of time.....take the IAC off and use TBI cleaner to clean it up, careful not to spray the electrical contacts....i actually had to lightly scrape mine off...good luck!

thanks jfbilbro,
i replaced my iac motor about a month ago, so i guess ill go ahead and try to look for vacuum leaks, ill probably go ahead and clean the iac port again...
Thanks again

prolly no need to clean it if it's that new..it should be fine......as for vacum leaks, crank the jeep and let it resume normal idle, and then spray carb or tbi cleaner along the vacuum lines and vacuum manifolds....if the jeeps hits a high idle, you've found the leak.....good luck with it....

If the high problem did not go away with a new IAC, it still could be the IAC. Don't know about your year but on mine they are adjustable.

anything happen with this - same thing happening to my new 91. initial cold morning start - idles at 1000, then ceps creeping - but hits 1500 in about 5 seconds... then throughout the day it will hit almost 2000. checked vacuum lines with nothing ... about 1 foot from the headers, where 2 pipes become 1... there seems to be a crack, but i sprayed TB cleaner on it and no change - i really don't think it is a vacuum leak... cleaned the IAC, and TB - no difference .. also - just bought a TPS, can't get the last screw out!! haha - ill get it over time i guess.. broke two T20 bits already - its crazy...

anyway- get back to me if you get an answer..

thanks

kyle

Mine ended up being the TPS. After I changed that it runs just fine. I had the same issue getting on getting one of the screws out. I ended up having to break the sensor out and twisting the screw out with channelocks. Wouldn't recommend doing that, but that's all I could do.... Good luck...

What would be a normal idle rpm. Mine seems to idle when I start it or if it's idling for a few around 600 - 800 Rpms.

@zephyr1298
Thats about the same as mine. Mine will start at about 1000 rpm for about 15 seconds then it runs 600 to 800.
