High Idle Problem

Ok, so this is my last resort before I start dismantling my entire engine. Recently my water pump went out so naturally I changed it out. After I changed the water pump and cranked the engine to ensure everything was still working, the RPM's ran at 2800 at idle. I changed the TPS and cleaned the throttle body, I checked the vacuum lines and had a bad connection and replaced the elboy. I also disconnected the battery and let it sit for 30 minutes to reset the computer. The engine still idles at 2800 RPMs. What else can I check before I start tearing down the engine piece by piece???

Also, my jeep is a 95 YJ with a 2.5.

Please help!
Justin

I'm having similar (though not as bad) idle problem. I think mine is due to the TB adjustment needing to be pulled down. I'm idling at probably 1400-1500RPMs, not anywhere near the 2800 you're experiencing.

Have you found out the cause of your idle problem? I am thinking that next week I am going to start breaking down the engine and replacing vaccum lines but trying to avoid spending too much money since I want to upgrade from the 2.5 anyway.

If you want.

Checkn youtube search "finding vacume leaks"

Something should turn up.

Remember these rigs are aging and stuff like this is most likely factory items.

The problem is that at 2800 RPMs the fan is going so high that it is hard to spray to find vaccum leaks because of the air coming off the fan. The good news is that on a hot day it is kinda nice to be under the hood.. too bad winter is fast approaching haha

You could pull the fan off just long enough to do the check.

Just set it up as if you had an electric fan.

You still want the water flowing

Did you ever solve this issue? what was wrong?
My 2.5L TJ's idle is between 2500 & 2800. While I'm driving it keeps the idle at 1500rpm in any gear but while shifting it jumps up fast, makes it suck to drive. My TJ did blow a vacuum line off the coal canister which I since plugged back in but did change anything. It all started after I replaced my water pump and thermostat cause they were bad

I also had this problem and it might sound crazy but make sure your belt isn't to tight. I know it sounds stupid but loosen and tighten the belt and watch the idle difference. It's a 4 banger thing I guess
