Wanting to have the option to decide when my front axle is engaged or disengaged independent of the transfer case state, I made this simple little
. I decided since the diaphragm in my axle actuator was still in good working order that this was a FREE way to be able to engage or disengage my front axle drive.
Being a piano technician, my past work on old player pianos (which work on vacuum) gave me the idea to make it quick and simple like this, using a couple of small pieces of cabinet grade plywood, some player piano tubing and a few fittings, all which were in my shop. I will probably redo this using metal parts sometime soon, but wanted to try it out like this first.
I found this to be much easier than making a cable locker, since it doesn't even require removing the axle actuator to do it. I just disconnected the vacuum feed from the line that goes to the transfer case switch, so I have totally bypassed that switch altogether. I ran that vac feed into the input on my valve, then ran the two lines from the axle actuator to the ports I made on the valve. Seems to work great.
I uploaded a short video to YouTube showing it, which is
Now that I have my transfer case fixed and back in, it feels great to have 4wd on my Jeep!
