How do I remove the lock plate plastic cover

I'm replacing my canceling cam, or at least I was.
It looks like I need to rotate the plastic cover clockwise, but it only moves an 1/8 of an inch. My manual doesn't mention the cover at all.

the plastic cover comes off with the lock plate, depending what type of lock plate depressor you have you can leave the plastic part on

Thanks Mc.
Once I got the cover off, I could tell that the cam was prolly ok and it was. I went ahead and put the new one, but still have the same issue. When using the left turn signal, if I have to move steering wheel to the right, even a little, it cancels the turn signal. The right works ok.

just a guess but is your steering column 180* out meaning at some point was the steering shaft removed and put back in 180* out..... that would cause the issues you are having

It could be. I have noticed that there are 2 fairly new looking bolts on the column bracket. Is there a way to tell if it's 180* out?

I'll bet your steering wheel is not centered!! The middle spoke should be pointing straight down. If the steering wheel is not centered your turn signals will act just the way you've described. It's a very simple fix, you just need to adjust the drag link till you get the steering wheel centered with the center spoke pointing down.

When I bought the jeep a year ago, the custom steering wheel middle spoke was at about 8:00 position. When I did center the wheel with the drag link, it didn't seem to make a difference for the turn signal. Though I thought it would.
I've had the steering wheel off a few times, maybe I put the hub on one spline off center. But I did mark the stems center before I took off the steering wheel the first time. Wish I knew which way to go if I repositioned the hub. I might have to use the trial and error method to see which direction it needs to go.

easiest way to tell if it is 180 out, with the steer wheels straight the nipple that the horn wire plugs into on the canceling cam should be at approx the one o'clock position. if it is 180 from that position you have to rotate where the column meets the intermediate shaft.

You're right, it's 180 out. The horn wire nipple is around the 8:00 position. I'll check my manual and see if I can figure this out.

one of two things happened, if you have a non tilt all you have to do is remove the bolt from under the hood at the base of the column that connects the column to the intermediate shaft and rotate it 180. if you have tilt the solution is the same as non tilt except the knuckle at the tilt joint could have been put back together 180 out, uncommon but possible. it should be a ten minute fix

I've got the bolt out, but can't figure out how to get the intermediate shaft off the column.

It looks like I need to lower the steering box too?

No the intermediate shaft collapses for safety reasons, you can use a hammer and smack the intermediate shaft down. If that does not work you need to drop the column down with the two bolts under the dash and also unbolt the foot of the column at the floor by your pedals. Once you do that you can pull the column inside the jeep to seperate the shafts

I can only get it to collapse about half an inch. I even tried clamping vise grips to the upper part of the shaft and hammered on the grips, but it won't go any farther.
I'll think about lowering the column tomorrow.

No. I noticed the steering shaft bearing needs replaced. I can't get the intermediate shaft to collapse, so I may just order a new one when I order the bearing. Then use a die grinder and cut the old shaft in two, it should come off then.

You can get it out if you just drop the steering gear box what 2-3 bolts takes a minute. Then maybe with some PB you can get it to collapse and reuse it.

Yeah dropping the gearbox is pretty easy. Just breath man I know dealing with Jeep problems are annoying to say the least but it's all worth it in the end with the wind blowing in your hair and that top down.

The u joints on the shaft seem to be ok, no play in them and I did get the steering box bolts broke loose. So I just ordered the bearing, but not a shaft. I'll lower the steering box when the bearings gets here.
