How I fixed the rear frame rust by the shackles

I bought a 92 YJ for a deal because the rear section of the frame at the shackles was rusted on both the drivers and passenger sides. I took the gas tank out and started grinding... Once I got everything cleaned up I started measuring and designed a set of 1/8" plates to go over the rusted area. With the 1/8" plates you can still use the stock bushings and shackles. The steel sleeve that the shackle bushing fits into actually sticks outboard of the frame about an 1/8" on both sides of the frame so it works out perfect... I also incorporated the factory frame holes / slots, but I over-sized them so there was room to weld the plates to the frame in those areas as well as the edge of the plates. When I had the design complete, I had the plates laser cut and started welding. Here are some pics of the results from start to finish.

After I completed my Jeep, my brother in-law noticed his frame was bad in the same area, so we fixed his the same way, then another friends and another friends and so on and so on... The repair on my jeep is going on 2 years now and it's held up great!

I'll bet you could sell that as a kit. Very impressive!

That's a good price to fix a common problem. I have seen in 4wd Hardware that they now sell almost the same thing but for about $50 more. Yours looks great.

I have used the repair kit that is sold online. We ended up only using a section if it to make things easier. But works great.

I am not sure of the place I found them. At the time I think it was the only place I could find them. Any one should do good. To save some headache use only as much as you need.

I'm not sure I understand, are you saying to cut them and only use what is needed to cover the rust? These were made to reinforce the whole back section, no need to cut rust or no rust.

looks good man. mine was rusted in the same spot and i just got some rear cj shackle hangers and my buddy plated the area with 3/16 plate and welded them flat on the bottom. it was a lot easier than sleeving the frame and it gave me about 1 1/2 inch lift in the back. plus it only cost 40 bucks.

Then what did you do to the front to level the Jeep out?
Also, when you do that it's just like adding a really long shackle, which only lifts the rear side of the spring and might cause driveline vibration...

i put lift shackles up front also.i was worried it would cause some vibration but it didnt. i was ready to drop the front spring hanger on the rear springs if it did vibrate but it didnt need it. it didnt change the pinion angle as much as i thought it would. i have 3 in lift springs on it also.

Good deal, but it must have cost more than $40 if you needed to add front shackles.

Nice repair, super clean. Makes you not as scared of rusted out jeeps thats for sure. There are some DEALS on rusted out ones. Like literally half of what a clean one costs ... big savings if you can weld in repair kits
