how to clean carter carb

stock 1990 4.2 with carter carb
after sitting for 6 months it will only start when gas is poured into the carb or with starting fluid. I disconnected the fuel line from the carb to fill the container to pour into the carb directly.
By doing this I am assuming the pump is working and the fuel is ok.
I am thinking the carb needs to be cleaned or the floats are stuck.
Any tips before I open the carb?
thanks in advance

The carter BBD is very simple to work on. Be sure to have a rebuild kit on hand to replace the gaskets.

Inside the carb there are two steel check valve balls of different size. They are not interchangeable in location so be sure to put them back in the correct spots.

Be methodical and organized in the disassembly of the carb. You could even take pictures of the stages of disassembly if you think you might want a visual record to go back to in case you aren't sure of what part goes where.

Edit: Also be sure you have replaced the fuel filter and that it is correctly installed.
