How to remove transfer shift lever.

A PO tried to extend the shift lever on the transfer case in my 93 YJ 4.0 engine, 10-15 tranny. He attempted to weld a piece of galvanized water pipe in the middle. The really crappie weld didn't last long. The shank of the leaver appears to be square and has a couple of holes where I assume a tool would fit that would compress a couple of tabs to remove the lever. Am I on the right track? Just don't want to do something stupid just cause I didn't ask. Thanks in advance. Ev

The lever isn't made to come apart. Sometimes it does when the parts get wore.

The connection down at the bottom is made with a rubber grommet and a metal clip that holds everything together. The clip is the part that wears out then the shifter comes off. But its not made to be taken apart.

I suppose you could dismantle it, but you would probably end up breaking the spring steel clip and have to resort to welding the shifter directly to the bottom shank on the linkage side.
