How tough is it to change front shaft seals??

I did new universal and new ball joints last month and now my seals are leaking.(one side mostly) I thought I was carefull but I guess not careful enough.

I shouldn't have any trouble getting it back apart but from there I don't know how to get the old seals out and the new ones in. Any tips or gotchya's I should know about? Do I need a seal puller???

Any tips would be great because I've never done seals before.

Thanks,
Rich

PS. I have a 1990 YJ w/ 4cyl.

You have to pull everything out of the axle to do the drivers side. It is a pain in the ass and that is why mine still leak after two years.

Pass side isn't bad. You have to pull the axle back out (obviously) and remove the actuator assembly. Once you get that off the seal is inside the hole in the axle housing for the actuator. You should be able to pop it out with a screwdriver and carefully tap the new one in. just take your time and don't mess up the new one. And lube the inside of the seal before you put the axle back in.
As for the drivers side, I've not done one myself, but I think it's pretty much the same, but you have to pull the diff cover to get to it.

TYEWILLIE,
You are right. The right and left side is different. I broke down and let a local repair place do the work. I know, I shouldn't have but my back didn't have another day of hunching left in her. I was quoted 4.1 hours of labor + Parts. I get her back today. No upgrades any time soon for my YJ. : (

You mean the vacuum actuator for the 4wd right? When i pull that off should i do the mod with the spring in there? I forget what it was called and where to find it.

You can pull the actuator anytime you want. Use zipties to hold the shift collar in place and reinstall the cover but not the fork.
