Unhappy Humming noise from gas tank area

OK let me throw this one out there to you all. First of all I have a 1992 Wrangler. I think I might be going crazy, but every once in a while I hear a humming or buzzing noise coming from the rear area of the Jeep by the gas tank. It doesn’t happen all the time and as quick as it starts to make the noise it will go away. After awhile the noise gets a little annoying.

That's your fuel pump.

Does the noise mean that the fuel pump is going bad?

not necessarily, but you could hook a multimeter to it and see if it is drawing the proper amount of power.

You only hear it sometimes because it only runs enough to build up the necessary pressure in the fuel line then it shuts off.
You also hear it better when you have less fuel in the tank.
It's nothing to worry about.

Your fuel pump runs the whole time you have the key in the run position. You have a fuel pressure relief valve that opens when you have to much pressure in the lines and returns the fuel back to the tank via the return line. What you may be hearing is to much pressure in the lines, fuel pumps like to move fuel and when the can't they get loud. Have your fuel pressure tested at the fuel rail, you may have a bad relief valve.
