well the ford 8.8 is a rear axle, its a hair shorter than stock but not a big deal. its a good swap. the best dana 44 rear for a yj is out of late 80's xj cherokee. harder to find, only available for a couple years, if you find a comanche rear d44 thats fine to. these axles have the same bolt patterns as stock and very similar lengths. the 8.8 is very abundant, and found in explorers, disc brake axles were from around 94 or so on.

the front is gonna be a different story.

Most explorers have an 8.8'' Rear with disc brakes that work with the yj master cylinder. I can't tell you exactly what years-mid and late 90's for certain. 95 96 97 I know have it. Dana 44's can be found in some comanchees and early cherokee's.... I again can't tell you specific years though. There are certainly people who do know on this forum though.

I think the D44 is a superior axle to the Ford and even the ones from the 70/80's in full size jeeps like my J10 have been successfully transplanted to Chrysler jeeps with little modification.
My 2 cents.

^this is true, but he wants a similar width, and the bolt pattern is also a consideration

You are right...his decision is width-related...and the trade-off you make in switching bolt patterns, and ultimately the factor he didn't mention: daily driver or off-road beast..

ya, definately more info is helpful, how complicated is he willing to get, how interested in upgrading the front is he. if you wanna swap the front to and get into heavier modification, now 44's front and rear out of older jeeps or what not come into play. but most people early in the process don't have a handle on the whole picture yet anyway, and dont' realize what modification there is just to change the rear.
