ID lift kit height?

Welcome everyone. I just picked up my first Jeep ('92 Wrangler 4.0L 5sp) and I have little experience with 4x4 and pretty much anything Jeep related. I'm loving this blue beast and expect to have years of fun with it. It's not perfect, going to be a project, but it's my diamond in the rough. So the reason why I'm really posting is that there is a lot of bounce in the suspension so I was going to swap out the shocks for new ones. No telling how the previous owner treated it... My problem is that I'm having a difficult time identifying what shock to get. I was told that it had a 4" lift (Black Diamond sticker on the current shock and leaf spring). Is there a way that I can positively ID the lift so that I can get the correct shock? I really appreciate the help.

What size tires does it have? Is it still spring under the axle or over? And are they stock shackles or longer after market?

one way to pick shocks is to measure the compressed and extended length and order that way.
or, the stock rocker panel height is 18", thats with 28" tires. measure yours and figure your lift out from that. be sure to deduct for a body lift and over size tires.

The springs are under the axle and its sitting on 33" tires. I'm bot sure of how to tell if the shackles are original or not. Soory about the one picture that is upside down.

Excuse my ignorance but if the shackles are stock, what gives it the lift?

The new springs were arched to give you a higher ride height. When i bought mine the sticker from 'Superlift' was still on the spring. I googled that number and it showed that i had a 1 1/2 inch spring.

Thanks. I will have to crawl around and look for a stamped number because the sticker didn't have a part number or anything else...just Black Diamond Shock AT.

Remove the stock track bars and sway bar and the ride should be better. The track bars are pretty much useless. Also check the age of the tires. If they are really old it will have a much rougher ride because the rubber dries out and gets very hard.

X2 I did this and what a difference! But don't toss them to far just incase you want that sway bar back.

What is the purpose of the track bars/sway bar? My Jeep corners well with them and rides OK but am wondering if it would be better overall for my Jeep just to remove them? Especially if I want a bigger lift, like over 4''.

Dont remove your swaybar. If you need to swerve unexpectedly on the highway it will probably be the end of you and your Jeep. Get swaybar disconnects. Removing your swaybar can be really dangerous. The swaybar reduces body roll and the rebound from turning the wheel real fast left then right. Good way to fishtail out of control.

Trackbars are safe to remove though. They are supposed to keep your axles centered under the Jeep. Leaf springs do a good enough job of that. The downside of the trackbars is they stop the springs from flexing as easily and cause it to ride pretty solid.

I am sure someone will chime in and tell me how wrong I am about your swaybar. The bottom line is everyone's springs will ride differently. If they are nice and flexy you need your swaybar. If they are solid then you wont get much body roll anyways. All I am saying is dont just pull it out without knowing what you are doing. I myself own some disconnects I spent over $100 on. I keep them in almost all the time. Only exception is going from one offroad spot to another, and I drive super careful.

About 6 months ago I made a sharp turn on a trail with my buddy in my Jeep, he though for sure we were going to roll, and it was level land. He has a pretty flexy XJ he drives, but couldnt believe how dangerous my YJ felt making a sharp turn at about 15mph without the swaybar. I got more flex then him though.

I don't even bother with the highway or Ben speeds over 65 cause I can barely hit that lol! But yes it's all in your springs and setup. It's all about trail and error with the sway bar.

For safety, keep the sway bar. Invest in quick disconnects. I ran a soa for nearly 7 years as a daily driver. It had stock rear springs with 2" add a leaves and extended shackles. Total lift was nearly 8". The sway bar was necessary for road driving. I drove the PA turnpike regularly. It is better to have it on in the case of an emergency or a quick maneuver to avoid an accident. Disconnect it when you go offroad. The track bars are useless. Plus, an extended track bar bracket big enough for my lift was not available.

Sweet! Thanks for the help. Question, can I keep the track bars if I get a 4'' RC lift? If not then the track bars are useless to me as long as I don't roll on a corner and having more flex is always better
