Identify engine/trans swap

I just purchased a 1994 jeep wrangler sahara. The owner told me it was a 4.0 6cyl. Since the purchase I had to replace the radiator and 02 sensor. The Temp sending unit located in the back of the engine next to the drivers side was not in the engine and no hole was there for it. I started digging around after this and found that my engine block casting is this
1999-2001
C/N 53010449AA

Cast iron block, second bolt from pan rail on right side of timing cover is a through hole. Oil filter mounting on left side of block is pointing downward. Uses long main bolts and stud girdle. Basically the same as 1996-1998 except that it is a camshaft thrust plate block. Has "NVH" on side to denote block strengthened for "noise, vibration and harshness."

808mx11 is stamped right below my spark plugs.

Could someone please tell me what type of engine/transmission is in my 1994 yj? After replacing the 02 sensor I have had a major loss of power took it to a jeep dealership today and they said it was due to a missing kickdown cable bracket on the transmission. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Admittedly i dont know anything about the engine markings, but I do know that assuming its a Jeep engine, the 4.0 has fuel injection and the 4.2 that was in the older models of YJ and CJ was carborated. tose would be your choices of inline sixes, but since it says 1999-2001 it's most likely a 4.0. Hope this helps.

probably from a cherokee or grand cherokee. my block is a 99 also in my 87 wrangler. makes replacing bolt on accessories interesting

The 94 wwas obdi the engine in your jeep is obdii since its a tj motor. As for the computer it might be the wrong o2 sensor since its a newer motor. Or they swapped the motor without the computer.

Since replacing the 02 sensor Im having a loss of acceleration shifting is horrible as well, I have to keep it under 2000 rpms just to drive the jeep to work and school as of late would the 02 sensor play a part in this? The temp guage is not working not sure where to plug the other sensor that the 94 engine has in the back of the block... either tried to find what transmission I have bolted to the engine however the bellhousing has the numbers 708-1 and stamped on the transmission is the numbers 3836029 these are the only numbers on the transmission and could not find anything anywhere really frustrating since im essentially slipping gears and have no idea how many gears are in the automatic

The numbers come up with a tail housing on a a727 torqueflite tranny...if that's right it has 4 gears. can you take any pictures of the engine/tranny? Ill check into the temp gauge on that motor also.

If the motor is from a Cherokee or grand Cherokee here is a pic of a possible location for the temp sensor http://0.tqn.com/d/autorepair/1/0/u/G/42197068.gif

Here are some pictures I took it to a mechanic and they said the overdrive is shot the transmission keeps down shifting and It needs to be rebuilt or replaced apparently its a chrysler 4 speed with overdrive he thinks the a-518. What do you think tang? Btw he says he can rebuild it for 2500; do you think id be better off just finding a used one?

Hmm that's a tough one, the 98 came with the a518, I guess, but the 98 also came with a goofy Powertech i6 i don't know how different it is than a regular i6. You can buy a refurbished tranny for about $1000 as for swapping it I don't know what they'd charge to swap, and if you go junkyard it would be cheaper but don't know what you're getting. i'm still doing some research trying to find more info still

The m2xj is a motorcode from Germany apparently, but the a518 or 46re would be the transmission from that grand cherokee, and the transfer is an np242 I believe. Seems like a goofy swap, but if it was all together it makes sense and The cherokees, grand or classic are pretty cheap to begin with. The o2 sensor you would need would be from a 98 grand cherokee with a i6 and that might boost performance maybe, if not the computer might of been re-programmed? Also did they add another o2 sensor in the exhaust? iirc the obd2 has 2 o2 sensors to deal with whereas obd1 (year your jeep actually is) only has 1. If they modified the computer for obd1 then you would only have one, but if you have both then it's obd2. I know o2 sensors are pretty interchangeable though....

if it is from a grand cherokee and the trans is slipping, its a well known deal that hte bands need to be tightened in the trans. check out the zj section on jeepforums for info on it. i had a zj and mine slipped till i tightened them (must use a torque wrench) and hten zero trouble.

for 2500 bucks, you could put another engine and trans, i would find another mechanic

Thanks guys, tang it is obd1 one 02 sensor on the upstream. I honestly have no idea why they would swap this in. I think it is still using the stock wire harness and computer. Ill try tightening the bands i believe the transfer case is a np242 the mechanic also said it looked like a a518 as well. the oil pan is a 14 bolt pattern as well.

hit the zj section on jeep forums. they will be the most help. i don;t remember what trans i had in my zj, or the t-case number, but i swapped that full time t-case out for a normal old 231.

I have been reading the forums busemans thanks for the advice; Ill try adjusting the bands this weekend to see if thats a possible solution; As well as drain the transmision fluid. What do you think a fair rebuild price would be for one of these engines? Especially if I am dropping the engine myself and reinstalling it myself I just do not want to rebuild the auto transmission if I have to.

Yeah rebuilding that motor you might run into trouble with it being from a different vehicle, depending on the mechanic. You might be better off like Buseman said to goto a junk yard and find a new motor and maybe event the np231 along with it. You could always find a 258 if you wanna go old school then you have the carb and lack of emissions lol.
