Angry I'm convinced it's not the cowl seal.......

I had a leak on both the passenger and drivers side of my dash after a hard rain. I checked the vent drain tube and it was clear, so I installed a new cowl seal and thought I had fixed the problem. It finally rained in Oklahoma last week and the leaks were still there. I pulled the windshield down, took off the cowl seal, and ran 2 beads of silicone down the windshield frame under the cowl seal. I re-installed the cowl seal and buttoned everything up. It rained again today and the leak is still there. When I remove the inside windshield brackets there is water behind them and it is wet inside the windshield frame. The water runs down the front of the speakers when I start driving. I can silicone inside where the water comes through, but that will cause rusting somewhere, I'm sure. Sorry for the long explanation but I wanted to avoid all the usual suggestions. This is something I have not found on any other thread. Any suggestions will be appreciated!!!!

Have you had your windshield hinges off lately? Water can leak in from them. They are sealed with some goop from the factory. It may be dry rotted and cracked. I would run water into the air intake area and see if the leak appears. If it doesnt, wet the area of the cowl seal. If no leak, spray your windshield gasket. If it doesnt show up after all that, the only remaining place I can think of is under the hood splashes against the fire wall. Maybe the heater core?

Keep us posted.

I am in the same boat. Mine drips on on the passenger side, toward the center, under the dash

After I posted the thread I went out in the garage and dropped the windshield (getting pretty good at that!!). There was water under the cowl seal, so I cleaned it up and laid down a good bead of silicone and put it all back together. No 90desertanyj, I haven't had my hinges off, I may have to check that out. Thanks for all the responses. Good to know there are others out there that have the same problem. I'll post after I figure out if I'm still leaking!!

One other thing, I can spray a water hose all over the cowl, windshield, etc., and never see any leak........

It dawned on me that the leak started shortly after I installed KC Hilighters on my windshield hinges. I took out each of the torix bolts that hold on the brackets and siliconed behind them. Hopefully between re-doing the cowl seal and siliconing the hinge bolts my problem will stop.

Rained 2 inches today, and all of it was in my floor board again. Where in the world is the leak??? Can water get in through the windshield wiper drive on the windshield frame?

How is your top mounted? does it leak when sitting or driving, or both? could be coming in from the header screws at the top of the windshield frame. I'd bet it's the windshield hinges though. Good luck getting them off. I had to use every cuz word in my toolbox to get them off. When i replaced them i coated the back of the hinge with white litium grease to keep water, rust and crap out. works well.

Yeah, I've tried the cowl vent. I've also siliconed all of the windshield hinge bolts. Took each one out, siliconed, and re-installed them. I have decided it is in the header screws for the soft top or the wiper pivot gaskets. It makes sense because there is water behind the inside mounting bolts for the windshield when I take them out. When it warms up I'm going to systematically check everything with the water hose.

Someone told once that there is a gasket by the wiper linkage that gets dry-rotted and allows water to get in under the windshield frame and inside the jeep. Check this picture maybe it can help......................

Like so many, I had the same problem with my TJ. Removed the cowl, siliconed the hell out of every area I read about and more. The leak persisted. Hardtop, soft top... no difference. Leak came in from under the passenger side of the dash somehow. Finally, and I KNOW this isn't logical, but our local Jeep Medic said it was the seal around the passenger door. New seal: Dry as a bone.
Don't care that it didn't make sense. My Jeep is dry inside!

Your upper heater box could be cracked. Take the cowl screen off and look down.

That's exactly what I was told today and one of the things I'm going to check. It's obvious it is coming from inside the windshield frame because when I take out one of the bolts on the inside windshield bracket it is wet behind it. You can put your finger in the hole and it is set inside. Thanks!!

I'll check that again to make sure, but I have poured water into the vent and it all comes out of the drain tube. Thanks!

Found and fixed my leak!! The screws for the channel for the soft top were letting water drain into the windshield frame. When enough got in it spilled through the wiper motor opening and poured out over the speakers on both sides. Found it by running water over evrything systematically. Took the screws out, siliconed under the channel and reinstalled. Thanks for everybody's help!!!

My 2000 TJ is also leaking. Its so bad that the floor on the front passenger side has rusted really badly. The leak is coming from under the dash on the passenger side. I just ordered a replacement cowl seal and will hope for the best. Any suggestions?

Use a water hose with someone inside the jeep and systematically check each place it could leak. Mine ended up leaking in multiple places - under the windshield channel the soft top goes in - the cowl seal - and the windshield brackets.

Had another leak!!! The water is getting in the windshield frame and then leaking through one of the screws that hold the cowl seal in place (the one that secures the wiper wires). So I stopped the water from coming out of the windshield frame, but how the hell is it getting in??? I have resealed the wiper pivot seals and sealed the soft top channel at the top of the windshield. What else is there?

How old is your soft top? Maybe next time you take the top off, check the parts and where they connect. Could be cracked somewhere... I dont know but so far my hard top is golden (knock on wood) but this spring will be my first time for the soft top going on. Just bought my jeep last summer and skipped out on putting the soft on and left the hard top since the end of summer was approaching.

I have resealed the soft top channel on the windshield. Water is actually getting inside the windshield frame. Thanks for the idea tho.

Surely no one is following this thread anymore, but here is an update anyway. The water was coming in through the soft top channel where it screws on to the wind shield frame. Removed 1 torx bolt from inside windshield bracket and ran water along soft top channel. Water poured right through and out the bolt hole......more windshield gasket silicone on the soft top channel. It's stopped (for now).
