Installing Distributor help

I just want to know that im doing this right. On a 1990 Wrangler 4.2 im installing a brandnew distributor and was wanting to make sure im doing it right. So the engine #1 cylender is top dead center and the rotor button on the distributor is also set on the #1 firing sequence? And of coarse once it starts running you can adjust it. Now i have never done this before so if there is another way of doing it right please let me know.

Another question? Is there a marking on the distributor gear that tells you where to align the distributor up? Or is it putting the rotor button on the #1 firing?

You are going about it right. Just set the distributor in so that the lines up with the no.1 plug wire. Bump the key and see if she tries to fire. You stand a 50% chance of it being right. If the engine won't start or backfires through the carburetor, install the distributor 180 degrees from where it is and you'll be in the ball park. Once it starts then set the timing.

hey thank you very much. That's what i thought when reading the manuels but just wanted a straight answer. Pretty much if it's wrong the first time then that means the #1 wasen't on the compression stroke to power stroke but exhaust to intake stroke. Top dead center is where the valves are closed and piston at top? Thank you

Sounds like ur installing it right. There's a mark on the pully connected to the hermonic balanced that should be set to 8degrees so ull need a timing light also. If u have all the emisions garbage disconnected just play with the distributer till the jeep performs the best

High voltage ignition system.

I hope along with the distributor you did the coil, wires and plugs and went with at least a TFI system. You will notice a good increase in power and performance.
